Wax Hair Removal Benefits and Disadvantages

Hair waxing is a fairly tried-and-tested method of removing hair. It’s widely available in many beauty salons, dermatological clinics, and even in the form of do-it-yourself home waxing kits. This method has many distinct benefits, but it also has quite a few disadvantages as well. In this article, we explore both sides and present a few alternatives just in case you decide waxing isn’t for you.

How does waxing work?

There are two types of wax hair removal: strip waxing and hard waxing.

In strip waxing, a liquid wax is applied evenly on the skin area in the direction of the hair. The wax is then allowed to settle for a moment, after which it should cool down enough to grip tightly to the hair. A special paper or cloth is then pressed over the liquid wax, and in one swift motion against the direction of the hair, the paper or cloth is ripped off bringing with it the hair and wax.

In hard waxing, another type of liquid wax is applied evenly on the skin, but this time it cools down significantly that you no longer need a paper or cloth to remove it. The hardened liquid wax is simply peeled off by itself together with the hair that has clung to it.

When done correctly, either method removes the entire hair from the very root of the hair follicle.

What are the benefits of waxing?

The major benefits of wax hair removal are the following:

  1. Can remove large amounts of hair simultaneously. Unlike plucking or tweezing, waxing can cover a sizable surface area at once and remove all the hair instantaneously. This is an excellent method for getting rid of hair on the chest, back, legs, or arms. Waxing can also be done on smaller areas such as the eyebrows and upper lip.
  2. Semi-permanent. Hair waxing can leave your skin smooth for about two to eight weeks before hair regrowth occurs. Also, frequent waxing may damage the hair follicle over time and stunt regrowth, leading to a more permanent hair removal.
  3. Can be done at home. There are many wax kits available with detailed instructions on how you can safely do the procedure at home. Although it takes a bit of practice, home waxing can save you a lot of money from having to go to a salon, spa, or clinic.
  4. Relatively quick procedure. The entire waxing procedure can last for a few minutes up to an hour at most depending on the area to be waxed and skill of the esthetician.
