Water quality monitoring in the U.S is amongst the best in the world. But does this mean that can we totally depend on the government to ensure that our drinking water is safe?
The Safe Drinking Water Act authorizes the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to establish two important standards for water quality.
The first, primary standards, regulate contaminants that may affect human health.
Then there are secondary standards, that regulates the appearance, odor and taste of tap water.
Every two years, each Department of Environmental Quality or similar state agency, is required to tender to the (EPA), reports on the water quality testing in their area or jurisdiction.
Furthermore, there is no upside to the government taking the safety of drinking water lightly. Everybody has to drink water, from the President right on down to the average Joe on the street.
So with water quality monitoring and regulation in place, it would appear that we have nothing to worry about right? Wrong!
