Craftsman Scroll Saw Overview
In this blog I cover some of the more expensive and larger 20 inch scroll saws. However, I began to receive quite a few requests asking if there were any saws that still were good saws but simply didn’t cost as much.
The answer is yes! Although I highly recommend some of the other saws I’ve written about, that doesn’t mean you still can’t get a good saw for the $150 range.
The saw I like in that range is the Craftsman Scroll Saw. It has many of the same features as the larger, more expensive models have. The differences may be in size of table or only in ease of use. If you don’t saw that frequently, these features won’t matter that much.
The table is 16 inches versus 20. The 4 inch difference will allow you more room to maneuver your wood, but in reality, it is a convenience, not a necessity. The solid cast iron table is solid and smooth.
The table tilts one direction up to 45 degrees. The more expensive saws tilt 45 degrees in either direction. Again, nice, but if you want a cut from the other direction, simply flip the wood.
Like the other saws, there is a variable speed control. I use the variable speed control a lot. Many saws in this price range don’t have this feature. This is one of the main reason I like this saw for this price.
Vibration
Compared to the other saws there is a bit more vibration. However, it’s not enough to cause problems. So for the occasional cutting, you’ll be fine here.
How does it cut?
For a $160-170 saw is cuts great. Like all things if you expect something a third the cost to perform like something that is three times more, you have unrealistic expectations.
But the better question is does it cut well enough to be happy with your scroll work…Yes!
Conclusion
This is a good saw. For the price, it’s a great saw. This saw is for you is you saw only from time to time or want to get started in scroll sawing. If you want to cut often or professionally, there are other options.
But I like this saw in this price range because I think it’s better built and cuts better than all of the other plastic, cheaply built saws in this range.
